Lunge
Basic Level Single Sword and Quarterstaff term
Definition
A long step forward with the leading foot, leaving the trailing foot in place, usually immediately following a thrust. In the final position the front knee is bent and back knee is straight.
Quarterstaff: The forward extension of the arm, body, and legs used to reach a partner.
Intermediate
The classical movement which replaced the Passade or pass, as a means of reaching the partner and attacking him. Capo Ferro, the great Italian master of the late sixteenth century, is generally given the credit for this vitally significant invention, but Giganti, his compatriot and contemporary, must not be deprived of his share of the credit; at a slightly earlier date he and others had expounded the advantages of the lunge, albeit in somewhat less detail.
