Fight Director Requirements and Information
2.60 Fight Director Requirements and Information
- A candidate must submit the following to the Vice-President of Training and the Secretary.
- A professional resume detailing training, professional experience, and teaching credits. This resume must include a minimum of fifteen valid direction/choreography credits acceptable to the Fight Master/Master d’Armes.
- Five letters of recommendation from senior combat teachers, Theatre producers, and academics from theatre programs satisfactory to the Fight Master’s/Master d’Armes.
- A letter of recommendation from a Fight Master in good standing.
- Must hold a current Fight Directors, Canada Instructor Certification.
- Must hold current First Aid/CPR certificate.
- Must hold current Restricted and Non/Restricted Firearms Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) or the equivalent in the candidate’s country of residence.
- Must be a member in good standing of FDC for a minimum of seven years or pay the equivalent fee.
- Must provide service to FDC. This service may consist of the following: Serving as an FDC Regional Representative, Service on FDC Committees, Service on the FDC Executive Council, FDC Publicity and/or Promotion work, FDC Event Coordination, Article Submissions for the FDC Magazine, Community Outreach on behalf of FDC, etc.
- Must complete a two-year apprenticeship with an recognized Fight Director or Fight Master in good standing.
- Apprentices are encouraged to work with a variety of Directors and Fight Masters.
- Fees may be associated with this apprenticeship.
- Fees are negotiated on an individual basis with mentors.
- Fees are at the discretion of the mentor and are in no way associated with Fight Directors, Canada.
- Must complete:
- A Fight Director’s Workshop and pass all of the requirements for certification.
- In the event a candidate cannot attend a national workshop, application may be made to the executive for special circumstances.
- May have to complete and pass a research project known as or comparable to the Background Knowledge Paper.
- Within two calendar years of attaining their instructor certification, Directors must direct at least 10 separate fights for productions. These fights may be in a variety of venues including: Professional Productions, Academic Productions, Community Theatre, Film, Television, or FDC Events. Directors should also conduct at least one certification program.
- Director Certification expires three years after the date of issuance. Directors must re-certify to maintain their ranking title. Dues for the three-year certification must be paid in full prior to the issuance of the Director Certification.
- Fight Directors may not in any way imply or represent themselves in any official FDC capacity unless they are a duly elected/appointed representative of FDC.
- Fight Directors may not in any way use FDC, or their association with FDC, to imply or represent themselves as having any capacity or expertise at an FDC certification level other than their own.
- Where any reference is made by an Fight Director to their association with FDC on any Resume, Literature, Advertising, Article, Feature, Interview, Recording, Message, or Promotional material whatsoever, their current certification must be stated.
- A Certified Fight Director agrees to retain the use of this title only so long as he/she is a current FDC member in good standing.
